Andre lost. Readings of the Thresher’s musing amplitude grew even as he walked west to intercept. It was still weaker than average, but he was as tired as I was. A sloppy mistake cost him, and it was over.

Even then, he almost killed it. All it could do after their fight was limp away, regenerating as it went, instead of finishing him off. He tried self-destructing to stop it. His control team cut his bond with only moments to spare, shocked as they were that he’d try it. No Centiman Pilot would ever think about self-destructing to save what was in that Thresher’s path. A Pilot’s life was worth far more.

By the time Olympic’s Pilots made it east and killed the Thresher, it had hit its targets: the refugee camps around the same lake Andre had once shown me. The Centime sent in a relief team to deal with the aftermath—quarantining survivors, disposing bodies, setting up a perimeter around contaminated terrain. They also sent in news teams to report on the incident, relaying the tragedy to Centiman viewers back home, safe in their megapolises.

The relief team took a picture of the lake and included it in the after-action report, where I saw it. The waters, once clear and bright, were black, and a rainbow film glistened on the surface.
